There are some gorgeous homeware shops in the Southern Highlands – 2 hours from Sydney.
Bowral, Mittagong and more recently Moss Vale, are peppered with stunning homeware shops at all price points.
As you drive from Sydney to Mittagong, Barbara’s Storehouse is positioned on the right. The Mittagong shop focuses on furniture while the Bowral shop focuses on the smaller household decor and kitchen items. The Mittagong shop is renowned for its beautiful rattan furniture and homewares at ridiculously low prices.
There is one other shop in Mittagong which has some treasures if you go at the right time. The Hospice Furniture shop in Mittagong has some beautiful furniture donated to the charity shop and the prices are, of course, extremely reasonable. This is one charity shop which looks for all intents and purposes like an antique shop – no musty smell here.
Then onto to Bowral for a wander around the shops on the main road. The iconic ‘Dirty Janes’ warehouse style shop is currently being renovated but there are plenty of other shops which will keep you occupied for hours.
Drive a little further and you are in Moss Vale. Suzie Anderson Home has become a destination shop for people who love her Belgian, French and Hamptons style of furniture and furnishings. If you love neutrals, cream and grey then her shop will have you enthralled. You will probably come out having bought something just because you wanted it… not because you needed it!
Next door to Suzie Anderson Home is Highlands Merchant, a recently opened coffee shop. You cannot book but I recommend you leave your name and mobile phone number and then wander around the neighbourhood. They will call you when they have a table available. Do check out the beautiful interior – all pale wood, the softest grey imaginable, white, duck egg blue and the most gorgeous soft pink (yes, pink!) door leading to the back. The food is very good too.
And, for those who love shoes, there is a Nina Leon outlet shoe shop diagonally opposite. I bought a stunning grey Ara ankle boots reduced from $350 to $99. Just one purchase from this shop makes a trip to the Southern Highlands worthwhile.
Do yourself a favour and make a day of it!
